Small Intersessional Working Group

Mandate of the small intersessional working group

A small intersessional working group (SIWG) was established by the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties by decision BC-11/1 to continue the work towards clarifying terminology used in the Convention. The mandate of the SIWG was extended by the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties by decision BC-12/1.

As mandated by the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties, the SIWG prepared a revised version of the draft glossary of terms including explanations, taking into account the comments received from parties and observers, as set out in document UNEP/CHW.12/INF/55, as well as the outcomes of the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties, and submit it to the Secretariat five months before the tenth meeting of the Open-ended Working Group. The SIWG held its third meeting on 21-22 September 2015 in Geneva, Switzerland, at what time it finalized the draft glossary of terms, for consideration by the Open-ended Working Group at its tenth meeting.

As mandated by the Conference of the Parties, the Open-ended Working Group at its tenth meeting finalized the glossary of terms. It also adopted decision OEWG-10/8 whereby it recommended that the Conference of the Parties at its thirteenth meeting adopt it.  In its decision, the Open-ended also decided that the SIWG should be consulted on the preparation of a report on the review of the Annexes I, III, IV and related aspects of Annex IX to the Convention. The SIWG completed it work by the time of the thirteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties at what time the glossary of terms was adopted and further work was initiated on the issue of the review of the Annexes I, III, IV and related aspects of Annex IX to the Convention.
